where do you get 20-40 oil? I know of 25-40 that merc sells but have not seen 20-40 oil for at least 15 years made by anyone. I know it was around in the 70's.

I'll take my V-drive any day, pull of the side-wall and BAM, it's right there

you can install a remote oil filter housing kit that will eliminate that whole hard to get to headache, and I second the motion, be glad you don't have a V drive.

Oil changed done! I would like to SHOOT the engineer that decided to place the oil filter under the engine with limited to NO area to work

The first number is the cold engine start-up viscosity, the 2nd is the warm engine viscosity. If you ride when air temps are getting low, then a multy-vis with a lower 1st number is best to give good pumpability and lubrication when starting cold. If you ride only when it's Summer time temps out, the a single weight is fine.
Storage should not play a roll in oil viscosity.
I'll continue to use Merc 20W-40

I honestly don't think the weight is going to matter if you aren't turning it over. I think in certain conditions, the engine has a harder time turning over with heavier weights of oil. If it's just sitting, I don't think weight will matter.

Oil question
My 05 Ci Engine manual states wrt oils...
5.7L/350CID
Marine Power does NOT recommend the use of multi-viscosity, non detergent type oils. Oils that contain solid additives or low quality oils0other than 20w-40 20w-50) are also not recommended.
The chart sez...below 32 20w...32-50 30w..above 50 40w
Since our temps vary from 20 to 100 over the course of the year, I find this to be a bit confusing. During winter storage (inside non heated) it certainly can reach 20.
In the boat, I have 20w-40 for the past year as recommended by my local boat dealer (non Tige dealer).
Is 20W-40 the proper type?
TIA, PaulTags: None
