You should have water escaping around the edges. I set my stick length to wedge the plunger up against the boat with a small amount of deflection in the rubber. Then I set enough water flow to always have some escaping around the edges when the boat is running. If you've got that, and water coming out the exhausts, you're good.
What I have done is remove the water inlet to the trans cooler and ran a hose to a 5 gallon bucket of water. On the boat that I just rebuilt, I put in a set of ball valves that gives me an barbed fitting to hook up to the 5 gallon bucket. Or Indmar sells a flush kit that you can install inline in the water intake that allows you to hook up a garden hose.
My fear is that the plunger falls down while I'm in the boat.
