I am going to need a new anchor before lake season. I was wondering what you guys were using and what you think are the best all around anchor?

Thanks,
Ben

A lot depends on what is on the bottom of the water you are planning to use.

I use a mushroom anchor on about 100 feet of rope. That is good for anchoring in soft river bottom up to about 30 feet in depth. The anchor is not large nor heavy and will not hold in high winds. But in winds up to about 10 MPH it works fine for holding my boat.

I'm in anything from Eastern New Mexico high winds silty bottom to North Texas Lakes.

Hands down the best anchor is a box anchor. Great in all lake bottoms. It folds flat so storage is not a problem. With that anchor, the bungee tie-off rope and a built in hammer spike, you are set for life!

I've been using a CHENE anchor. That and 100' of rope seems to work fine. It sets real easy and the design makes it easy to retreave.

Another vote for the Box Anchor and Spike. Never a problem

I use a fluke anchor and it works well, but only if you attach about 6' of chain.

I'd rather have a box anchor because it does not require the chain.

Does anyone know where to get a better deal on a box anchor? I looked it up on the manufacturer's site and saw a quote near 120 bucks. I have heard multiple times that the box anchor is the best.

That is cool, I've never seen an anchor like that. I wonder how hard it would be to make one.

That is a really cool anchor. I wish I had known about that before I purchased this one.

This works well and does perform like they advertise but the storage is a little cumbersome. We got the the 9 pound model.

We spent a lot of time at the box anchor people's booth at the boat show. We liked the way it collapses with the pull of a single pin - but I'm still skeptical. The only time we anchor for an extended period is when we camp at Lake Powell for a week. We see some pretty wicked storms and many times boats get loose. Has anyone tried one of these in sand for an extended period? Has the boat ever ridden out a storm when anchored?

I use a box anchor and can you that high winds will cause it too come loose. I'm using the smaller of the two sizes sold @ Tige Watersports, maybe if I upgrade it will hold a bit better.

It's the Tige dealership in Corona, CA...I'm sure you can find a box anchor online or at least closer to WI.

Box is the the only way.
I added a 6' length of chain and it really works super in strong current.
I own 3 of them.
Two for the boat, one for the campsite.
Lifetime guarantee, and anyone with the older models can exchange them for the newer (plasma cut) one free.

If Tige' Corona doesn't have it, try:

So which size box anchor would work best for a 24 foot Tige?

Small or large?

Also for sand spike; should I use the middle sized one?

If you look on the web site tiger posted it says that the small is good for up to a 30' boat but, if you want a better hold you might take the large its up to you.

I think I posted about these anchors on another topic...but we had a box anchor in our 24 foot deck boat. I went with the bigger model and never had any regrets. It held well in all kinds of Havasu and Powell weather and only slipped in a very nasty blow in sandy bottom...and then not very much. For my two cents, I would definately go with the bigger model. As a side note, I took the company at their word and didn't add any chain to the anchor...straight to rope. I have asked for a new one for Christmas since I sold the old one with our boat in October. I did keep my big sand spike though....:D

Wrangler,

The website says the small one is big enough for 24 foot cabin boats. Is that the one you might choose for a 24V? The large one is for sport boats up to 40 feet...Part of me says too big an anchor is like too good-looking or too much money - doesn't exist. On the other hand, I don't have infinite space on the boat. I did notice the large is only 3 inches bigger and 6 pounds heavier (and $30 more).

I went with the large one last time around and plan to do the same for our new 24Ve. Our deck boat was a 24 footer with lots of sail area...relatively flat sides if you will and it was easy to push around in a breeze. I tried several anchors prior to the box anchor and they always let loose...as I mentioned, I was really happy with the box and didn't experience 5% of the issues that I did with other anchors. For what my experience on our last boat was worth, I would say go for the larger size... When folded up, it didn't take up too much room and the bag is the same if memory serves for the large and small one... As you said, and I agree in this case...more is almost always the right answer if plausible and within the art of the possible.

We originally bought the medium-sized box anchor while we were at Havasu and tried it out the same day. It held the boat pretty well, but did notice it didn't set right away as they said it would. We exchanged it for the larger model and were glad we did. We literally just dropped it in and tied it off. We were in a cove for several hours with a pretty stiff wind and it held perfectly.

I guess size does matter...
