20 V what engine should I get?

I believe it comes standard with a Gm 5.7 L, 315 HP engine.
Is there any reason to go larger?

that engine has plenty of power, but if your looking to weight the boat down with ballast i would recommend the marine power 5.7 340hp. that motor has alot of power.

i have a 20v with the 5.7L 315hp in it. its got alot of balls but we added teh syncrotech option in it. you can do that if your not too sure if you want to upgrade into a larger engine. it gets you out of the hole much faster, and acts as a larger engine.

Why does one 5.7 have 315 horse power and the other have 340 horse power.
Is one a carburetor and the other EFI.

I have a Switch I which I believe is the same hull as the 20V. I've got the Marine Power 335. It is a multi-port injection engine. It has plenty of hole-shot even fully loaded with people. I've had 12 in mine and was still okay. I'd go with a little bigger engine now if the price diff. isn't too much.

What exactly is the teh sycrotech option? Can you get it aftermarket?
Is it a chip or some type of "bolt-on" addition?

The syncrotech is a 1.5:1 gear reduction in the transmission. It is not an add-on and practically speaking, must be ordered from the factory that way. With it you will get a larger prop. The result is higher rpm, lower top speed, but a much better hole shot. The engine doesn't work as hard. It will also allow you to weight your boat down more.

if gas is not a huge concern for you (as in $$) get the largest engine you can. as you start adding ballast and people, you will be glad you went big!

That base engine is carbuerated i wouldn't think about getting. Your hole shot is going to be rediculously bad with it. Get the 5.7 mpi mercruiser for just a little more cash or better yet spend about 340 more and get the 340hp vortec.

We have the 6.2 litre Mercruiser. Its 340 hp. So much grunt.
If you can afford it get it! We can carry 1200 litres of Ballast with a fill crew and still rip out of the water.
P.S. And it looks cool.

We have the 315hp Mercruiser. It works well for how we boat. Most of our lake trips are 30 to 50 miles from the ramp, so fuel economy was an issue. As for power, it has no problems pulling up two boarders with full ballast. It did take a while to plane out when I had eight people and a 4 days worth of camping gear loaded on. It was way overloaded.

I would definatley recommend spending the extra $$$ on the Marine Power 5.7 340HP. I took my 05 out on this past Saturday and could tell a huge difference between it and the 315 HP MPI Merc Mag in my 2000. If you can afford it go for it.

Although I have a 22V, we also got the Marine Power 335 (fuel injected 5.7 GM) for 2004 and the syncrotec. It pulls really well, even when loaded. Those options were a little spendy but consider the following.

If you relate carbuerated vs. fuel injected to the automobile market, many maufucturers have gone the fuel injected route. They are more reliable and better throttle response. Also, they are computer controled and you don't have to adjust the jetting. This is especially important on the water where conditions are worse on everything. You can't go wrong with fuel injection.

In addition, the fuel injection models are very easy to winterize compared to carbuerated models.

Syncrotec makes hole shots much easier and if your not concerned about top speed, then it is the way to go.
