View Full Version : Lake Powell went up a FOOT yesterday!

If it can go up a foot per day from now until my houseboat trip starts, I might be able to use the castle rock cutoff on June 9th.
It looks like at this rate, I will probably be good for the return trip. That would save me nearly 2 hours of farting around through the channel.

I hate to rain on your parade, but I doubt that it will rise a foot a day for the next 10 days. You are probably right on the return trip part. The only problem with that is finding out while you are out on the lake that the cutoff is open. I could just see some yahoo tell you that it is open and when in reality it isn't. That would be a bummer if you went that way only to find out that you were lied to and then have to turn around and go all the way through the narrows. To guard against that, I will offer my services to you, take me along and at the end of the trip, I will leave well before the houseboat and make sure that the cutoff is open and if it is, I will risk my tige by going through first, thereby assuring your safe passage as you follow a path that is proven to be deep enough.
I will await your further instructions as to when to meet and where.:D :ro: ;)

I'm waiting for the water to warm up a bit, I'll be there June 24th. Then again in July, then again in September, with another trip in the making after that.
Any questions?:D
I'll be there next week. I'll give you a report of the water conditions.
I am also going on the week of the 4th of July.

The Castle Rock Cutoff is where the yellow circle is. The green line is the high water line. The red box is Antelope marina. The light Blue box is Wahweap marina.
The city of Page is at the bottom of the picture.
If the cutoff is open (and it should be by 6/21) to go up the lake it is best to leave from Wahweap. If it is not, it would be best to leave from Antelope.

If you would like the best map available of Lake Powell (IMHO) go to this link:

talk about memories, the last time I was in Powell was 15 or so years ago, we used to ski in that cove that now is the cutoff, in fact the first time I got up on one ski was in that cove. I was using an old wooden (yellow) ski. It was probably 20 years ago. 17 or so years ago, we were able to pull 5 skiers up at once (4 slalom, and 1 combo). This was with an I/O. I wonder how many my Tige would pull?

The maps that I refered to are contained within each issue of "Lake Powell magazine". You can buy that magazine once you get to Page, or if you want them sooner I would follow the "contact us" link, that will give you an 800 number that you could call and ask them what the best way would be for you to get a copy of their magazine before you get there.

Thanks to all your help, we should have a great trip at the end of the month.
This is what we have done to be prepared.
1) picked up a GPS unit
2) Marine radio
3) I got a map of lake Powell from the Utah department of truism
4) I have requested a copy of Lake Powell magazine".
5) I have been using Goggle earth and planning out different days of our trip.
The only thing left is what to do at night in Page.
And where to eat in page or surrounding area.
Thanks

Well, the local lake has been steady for the past three weeks so they are dumping as much as they are receiving. The snow that we have seen in the hills is down to 3-6 inches deep. So, I think we have seen the highest the lake will be here. :(

Just to add variety, besides Strombollies, we have eaten at the "Dam bar and grill", it was pretty good. Our waiter that night was a kid named "Twist" and he also ran an on the lake catering service. For a fee, he and his partner would come out to you on the lake and prepare a meal (meals) for your group. We were going to try using them once, but the cost was a little high. So if you go to the Dam bar and grill, ask for Twist and see if he is still doing that.
I'm wondering if anyone has met this guy, and happened to use his services?
Also, there are a lot of local places to eat, when I'm there I like to go to the places that are only in Page (not the chain, fast food places). There is a steakhouse just at the top of the hill coming into Page, on the left side. I can't remember the name, but it was pretty good as well.

I'm not sure, I assume that the absolute minimum would be the level at which they say "it's passable, we don't recommend it, but go ahead if you dare", and the minimum safe elevation they say "it is safe to pass, but do it at your own risk". I think that Tall will be there next week so he will be able to give us a firsthand account.

I leave in 6 days...woohoo!!
It is going to be tight to see if the cut is passable when I go. That would probably save me nearly 2 hours, and about $75 in gas if it is open.
With my luck the cut will be 3 feet deep and I will go for it and some young punk in a wakeboard boat will come through and throw up a 2 foot wave and I will go busting props and such.
The houseboat probably has less draft than the Tige, and I can trim those engines up as well. I just would need to get the Tige up at it with a running start:o :o

I just got off of the phone with two people at Lake Powell the first was a Brent McGinn, Chief Ranger and the second was his boss, Eric Scott, Downlake District Ranger. I was speaking to Brent first and after a while Eric came in the room so he put him on speakerphone and I spoke to both together. Initially Brent didn't seem to understand what wakesurfing was. He cited the 20' foot rope rule and when I asked him "what happens when they drop the rope?" he didn't think that it was possible. "How do you stay behind the boat? Is the rope attached to the board?" he asked. After thoroughly explaining it to both of them, they both agreed that they wouldn't have any problem with this activity. They both said that they are concerned about the safe activities of the boaters and if they came up and saw this activity, they would deem it safe and move on to the next boat. Carbon Monoxide poisoning is their main issue, I cited the Utah law and they reccommended that I speak with the head guy in Salt Lake. I think it helped out alot when I told them that I have already had correspondence with him. I am going to be sending them a couple of pictures of wakesurfing, they said that they would like to inform their rangers that it is safe, and I invited him (Brent) out on my boat so that he could see how safe it really is. Don't know if he'll take me up on it, but I want to make sure that these guys in charge are not misinformed and apply other appropriate laws (teak and body surfing) to this activity. If I get pulled over and ticketed while I am at Lake Powell, I will be going directly to this guy's office to fight it.

I don't think we are in too much trouble as long as we do not act like smart arses to the water cops. They generally get defensive when we get defensive. I think a little education about where the CO is will make sense to the water cops.

Good deals are to be had after peak season. I booked 10/15 and got a house boat that normally runs 5500 for 4500 with 300 in fuel credit.
There is nothing better than being out in the middle of Padre Bay using your REI biodegradable soap and your boat shower to clean off.:ro:
Quoting myself, because I am an idiot. I got the houseboat for 3500, not 4500. It was 2,000 less by doing it later in the season.

Picture from today from Waynes World of the cutoff
All right, I give up, I have looked and cannot find that picture on Wayne's world. Would you please help a poor guy out and tell me where it is. The waters touched at 6:34 this morning, I wonder if there is a picture of that?
It hit the mark yesterday!

I guess with all of the big prize money involved, someone had to be out monitoring it.
Must have been some park ranger with nothing better to do because nobody was out wakesurfing yet.
It had to be an exciting moment. I'd expect news coverage of it tonight, film at 10:00:D

Nobody from Page, it is Torey Narans from Evergreen High School in
Evergreen,CO. I am one of the lucky parents who get to chaparone
15 young adults (they are all good kids) from Colorado for his graduation party week.
We will also have a couple of the Top Professional Hydrofoilers (Torey is
one of them) on the planet there at his party week. So if you see a group of foilers going HUGE in either Bullfrog or Halls Bay behind a Tige that would be us.
Stop on in!
