View Full Version : I have another question. :-) How wide (and deep) is a Taps2 plate?

Well, I sold my toy car (sniff, sniff), and would like to stop paying $100 a month to store the boat, and put the boat into my garage. In order to do that, I will have to pay someone $$$ to move some ductwork, so I'd like to try and make sure it will fit first.
My garage is 20' 3" deep. My boat is 20', and the taps plate is (I think) 6 inches deep. My thought is to cut away a small section of drywall, and build a box in the wall. This box would then have room for the taps plate to slide into. It would be really nice if it would fit between the studs, but my studs are 16" apart, and the Taps2 plate is probably wider. Does anyone happen to know how wide it is? Also, is it 6" deep?
thank!

12in x 6in would be my guess..... from memory....
20" wide 9" deep. Just measured one off of an 08 Z1.

thanks for measuring it, not what I was hoping for. My studs are 16" apart, and I was hoping the plate was no more then 6" deep. :-(

How often do you plan on putting in the garage? If you are just planning for winter storage, I would disconnect the taps ram and let the plate dangle.

The boat would be in the boat, when we weren't using it. We are not allowed to keep boats on our driveway, or street. I currently pay $100 a month to rent a garage about 20 minutes from my house. I used to have a toy car (S2000), but just sold it on Monday. I was hoping to save some $$$ and keep the boat in my garage.
I've thought of that option too, just want to make things as simple as possible. I also have to remove the platform, and drop the tower. I know it doesn't sound like much, but it is PITA! I would like to be able to back it in, disconnect and go. But with all of this said, disconecting the ram every week, might still be an option.

Ok what your gonna have to do it cut your sheet rock back across 3 studs... give yourself an additional 2-3 around the top. On your sheetrock cut, lap over about half the width of the two outside studs so that you can patch in the sheetrock and have something to nail to. Cut the center stud across the top and bottom. Now take two studs and run the top "plate" and bottom "plate". Run additional support trimmers between the two new plates you just put in to give the top plate some support. Now you've just created a square. Now patch your sheetrock and pull your boat in! :D

Oops nvm... didn't realize the depth was your issue. Forget everything I just said.
asn, what's on the other side of the wall?

A new custom designed plasma tv stand???:D
I bet you could safely use a quick disconnect pin to be able to drop the plate since you already have the swim platform off. A pin like what holds the platform on is what I am thinking. I bet it would have the same sheer strength as the bolt that connects the bottom of the ram to the plate as it is.

Tanner - I was already thinking about doing that. But it will only gain me 3". It looks like I need 6 more inches.
mcd - Great idea. I have a closet on the other side of that wall. I may have to build a box in the closet that is 6" deep. I could then back up the boat, and have the taps plate slide into the box. Now I just have to get the wife to buy off on this idea. :-\. I also have a 3" wide, by 2 foot deep Heat Duct running up from the basement in my garage. If things work out (and there isn't any plumbing in that box), I am going to have to move it to the corner of the garage. But I don't mind spending the money to do that, if it saves me $$$ for storage.
It would be terrible if somehow the drywall was accidentally busted up:rolleyes:. But it would create a great opportunity that your wife would probably accept.

Tell your wife that the you’re making a shoe shelf for her in the closet, and the upside is that the Tige will now fit in the garage

If you have a tower on your boat make sure it can fit in the door frame. Most likely you will have to put your tower down and hopefully it will clear the top sill plate in your garage opening.
My opening was 82.5 inches and the tower folded measured from it's highest point to the ground was 86.5 inches. Initially I was 4+ inches too tall to get it in. I had the bunks on my trailer lowered 3 inches and then use an 11 inch drop bar to push it in. I now have about 2 inches of clearance with my 20V.

Well, the boat fits into the garage where I store it now. I can't imagine it being much different then mine. If it is, then I am screwed!!
1Lab - Which trailer do you have? Mine is on an extreme

Mine is on a Trailmaster Vanguard built in Mishiwaka,Indianna so it probably won't compare. It gave me hell for a couple of months both length and height. Got length including Taps Plate down to 20' 3". I never worried about height when I bought it but was concerned with length so it was part of my sales contract. They landed up customizing the foldback tongue and the bunks so that the boats water intake and speedo impellor did not touch the bunks so they could pull the boat a few inches further up on the trailer which gives me taps clearance.
When we confirmed the length was correct I decided to look at height and found out I was screwed. It cost a little over 5 bills to mod the trailer.
I hope yours fits height wise.

1Lab - The boat is 20' long, and the taps plate is 9" deep. How did you get everything down to 20' 3"?
zad0030 - it is a 2 car stall, but my wife needs to get her car in there too.

Good Question  , but when we measured it the Taps plate I believe was in the full up position. I measured three times and dealer also measured and independent of each other we came up with 20'3". I have 21' plus in my gargage depth so I wasn't overly concerned with length once height bit me in the butt:D
II would re-measure for you but the boat is 50 miles away at Reeds Marine. I pick up April 18th and will have fun getting it in the door and where it needs to go in stall #2.

Ah, I see. We sacrafice the garage to the boat. :D
I know on my boat that the taps plate is somewhat covered by the transom, becuase it sticks out. I dont know if this is the same on yours.

What is your exterior? Brick? If so, you can make it work. You have 3.5" for your 1/2" sheet rock, then 3.5" for your 2x4 wall, then your 1/2 OSB sheating, so there's 4.5" inches. Then you probably have a 4" brick pocket, of which your brick (depending on your brick) eats up about 3". So you gain another inch. Subject whatever thickness of board you use for your back plate. So we're roughly at 5" w/ a possibility of a bit more.
As someone else said.... the Taps plate actually sticks back in beneath the transom 2 or 3 inches. Then subject a maybe an inch or two b/c you can gain that by putting the taps all the way up. You've now picked up about 9 inches. If it's to tight, I would think you can pick up the extra room by angling the boat, and still leave enough room for your wife. Good luck

Well, after a couple of hours measuring this morning, and cutting 2 holes in my drywall, I think I can make it work. I will have to move 1 stud over about to the left 3-4 inches, and possible one on the right a few inches too. The thing that may cause me a problem is I have a ton of wires to the left of where I need to build this box. I hope I have enough slack to push them to the side. If all of this works well, I then need to move a vertical (duct) stack that is currently 30" wide, by 20" deep. It will be a lot of work, but worth it if I can get the boat in my garage, and not have to pay for storage.
will you save some room if you store it taps plate down/slalom mode?

Sell your house and find one with a garage that will accomodate your boat. If you start cutting the wall and getting into your closet then you better be willing to repair it when you go to sell it. Sounds like an all around pain in the a$$ no matter which way you select.
Good luck

kko - I don't know. I'll find out this weekend.
Being a Tige Newb - Does the plate reset to slalom everytime you turn off the key, or does it stay where you left it?
Carter13 - Moving would be my last option. Leaving the boat where I currently keep it is much closer to the top of the list. :)

It depends, If you have the hydralic then it will stay but if yoiu have the electric it resets to wakeboard when shut off.

Ok, I have the boat at home, and I can almost get it into the garage, and a very slight angle. I have to push on the garage door so it doesn't hit the trailer.
The Taps plate is 9" deep, but the top of the transom sticks out 6" more then the bottom, so you really only need to worry about 3 - 4" of the plate. If you have a garage that is 20' 4" deep, a 20V will fit, it will be snug, but it will fit.
I will post some pics of how close the taps plate and toe hook are to the wall.
I am going to go forward, and re-do my garage. I am also going to build some small boxes in the wall (don't have to go into the closet) to give me a little more space.

here are the pics - sorry for the quality, it looks like I may have shrunken them too much.
You can see I have about 1/4 " of space for the taps plate. Not enough, but I will take care of that by the EOM.

I thought I'd post a pic of how it looks now. It ended up costing $650, but it was well worth it. I no longer have to pay for storage
I am now able to get my wife's car, my car and the boat in our garage. :D
