When people ask me what kind of gas mileage do I get I say "its a truck so what do you exspect"? What can we do,we pull boats, trailers, dirt bikes, quads and snowmobiles to say the least. We all need a truck.I used to have an 03 avy then went to a 06 sierra but plan on going back to a 08 Avy.My dilemma is do I get the burnt orange to match the KTM or a blue one to kinda go with the pacific blue Tige or just say screw it and get a black one. Any thoughts?

Do you have any more shots of your boat garage? I am in a dilemma right now, build a shop on our property or buy a small warehouse.
I am looking for idea's on shops, The issue is that I do not want a big box in my yard, I want it to tie into the house. ( like yours)
If anyone has pics of cool shops please post.

I will take some pics this week end. The garage is attached via a breezeway and roof. Our fine city will only allow a 1000 sf detacthed garage with a maximum hiegth of 15'. So I designed the garage to be connected with common roof and foundation which is the ordinance. It is my dog house, it is 24' wide x 44' deep in one bay and 32' deep in the other. I can park the rig and boat in the deep side and that is where it sits all summer, ready to go most times. In the winter the boat moves to the other side as it is more out of the way there, but requires tower to be folded down. I have the spce heated and spend time out in the dog house whenever I can. The biggest bonus is there is 9' tall storage shop under both garages. I built this home before concrete and steel went through the roof, but I would still pony up to do it again. I just remembered the architect has the plan on line. http://www.habitationshomeplans.com/plan_details.asp?planNumber=45
I spent 7 years designing this home and he is taking all the credit, but this is it. I got my man space and my wife got her kitchen and bath, here is the bath, she tried to outspend me in the garage, but I got to keep up. Good deal for me.

That's to buy plans already drawn. To start from scratch is worse, that's what I did and now he is trying to make more on them if someone else wants a copy. That is how architects make extra coin. Charge the guy through the nose to do an original design and then turn around and sell it to anyone else, of course I won't see any design fees or anything on any plans he sells off my design. That's life!

It is called get an education. Learn several skills and be a very versitile marketable person. The number one thing I say is EDUCATION and invest in realestate ASAP.
So buy your first house and make the toys your second thing in life after you have built up a good foundation. I wanted a boat when I was in my early 20's and I saved for 10 years to buy the boat I wanted CASH this way I would not have a big toy payment. It is bad enough to just keep up with the maintenance.

Kscales,
Yes it's 24x30. That's the biggist size I can have per our building codes thats not attached to the house. I still rent some warehouse space for my Falcon, Mustang and other toys. Plus when I need to do a project in the shop I'll take the boat there, I don't like to get dust & stuff on my baby. It's only a mile away. Of course the 24x30 is not big enough, but I would imagine if it was 60x60 it would still need to be bigger!

I agree with Anhaney. EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION, and then earn interest with your money instead of paying it. My wisdom is borrow if your asset will appreciate in value, pay cash if it depreciates. It's worked for me.

Of course there is the great Ford/Chevy debate. And I am always willing to accept that another man has a different preference than I. And honestly, as far as looks go, that style F-150 is about the best looking ford I know. But Matt, your not just any guy. I grew up on Chevys, thats all my dad ever had, still does to this day. I switched to Fords when I bought my first Diesel about 6 years ago and have just stuck to them since. Here's my theory,
Drive whaterver works for you, brand doesn't mean SH$T.
I have an 07 Ford Powerstroke King Ranch 4x4 Short Box single rear wheel and it works best for my wife and I. We own an 05 Arctic Fox 860 camper and needed the 4100 payload that the Ford delivers because none of the other 1 ton SRW trucks comes close, and the Power Stroke delivers the torque that we need for the camper load and towing our 22V on long distance trips.
For me it's not about name brand or status symble it's about practicality.
This Tuesday I saw a guy towing a newer DD Correct Craft with an older Caddilac around a 1985 and thought hey if it works for him WTF...............

I like nissan too. I had a 300zx I LOVED. I bought my daughter a 1997 nissan pathfinder for her first car. Nothing against toyotas, it just seems nissans are also very well built, but easier to find good deals.
I agree you should drive what you like, I don't like when people buy a car for status, but different strokes and all. I honestly have always loved chevy, and the motors, especially the small block 350. I have always test driven other brands like fords to make sure I wasn't being blind, but just didn't like them. Its a good thing also, because I wasn't kidding about the uncles on pension from GM. I would seriously have to explain myself. I grew up in the san fernando valley, and their used to be a HUGE GM plant in Van Nuys that employed a TON of latinos.

The new cummins does not get near the mileage of the old 5.9ls. In fact the new aftertreatment systems (bluetec) are hurting the mileage on everyones trucks. Not to mention the problems that are cropping up due to them. The ulsd even decreased the mileage of my 5.9 by about 5%

That road is actually inside of Zion Canyon National Park and there are a few other areas in Southern Utah where the asphalt is red due the red crushed rock.

Nice rides guys. I too am a GM guy, my first truck was an 1985 chevy pickup that I ran into the ground in high school and college, then I bought my dads 1985 chevy suburban and drove that for a few years. Then in 2001 I bought my first new vehicle, this Yukon. I love my Yukon, I have 77K on it now and plan on driving it till 100K. The new ones are sweet but they are REALLY proud of them! Who knows, maybe in a few years they will even have the Yukon Hybrid thing all worked out and I can save a few bucks on gas.

When I see that tan creamy color I cringe to think what it would look like on a boat, but your boat proves me wrong. You really pulled off that color combo!:ro: :ro: :ro:

That is the original trailer in the pic. I got the new trailer this past Thursday. So far it's going ok. I have only unloaded and loaded once, and that part went fine so far (boat off, boat on). The new trailer is giving me a fit with dragging. I like to never got her backed into the driveway Thursday night. We went out Sunday and the forward most cross member caught the transition in the ramp, I have never had that happen before. I had to change my hitch from a 2.5" rise to a 2.25 drop just to be able to get into the driveway and I guess that has lowered the tongue enough that in certain situations its going to drag on some ramps.:( :(
Thanks for asking, "good memory."

Hey Matt I think you could solve my dilemma of what color of new Avy to buy.Your boat would match the burnt orange Avy and KTM.How about a straight across trade for a 2007 20v with 40 hours, pacific blue in color.I will even throw in free delivery and pick-up.Let me know.LOL
Hmmm man I dont know...maybe if you had navy blue instead of pacific I may have considered. :p

Nice setup OWN! I am going to add another garage, our current garage is 40 X 24, so the boat does not fit. Right now it's packed away in a warehouse.
What benefit did you get by tying your detached garage into your house? I need to look into our covenants to see if I need to do that to put it where I want it and also to still keep my shed.

From an insurance standpoint, if it's tied to the house, it becomes part of the "House" and not an "Other Structure" . Most home policies do not have enough coverage to replace a garage with out adding it on as an endorsement, which may cost more in premium then just increasing the size/replacement cost of the house.

I needed the roof and foundation attached to the house to get the size I wanted. Detached buildings have a maximum size of 1000 sf and a 15' height restriction. Also if it was detached it would have needed to be behind the back of the house. I then would have no shop underneath and to the size I wanted. I also have a walkway under the drive to storage under the other garage. None of this would work without it being attached. The tricky part was finding a lot it would fit on. I originally designed the home for another lot the 2nd garage was full depth on both sides for that lot, but my current lot is angled and I lost the back corner in the back. Here are a a couple shots from the back. It doesn't look like it in the photos, but I can get a small vehicle, into the shop. You can not tell for the pics, but I am on a completely flat lot with a very high water table. We had to get real creative with the landscaping to hide all my man space.
Moki, I love playing with designs and stuff like that. If you would like some help give me a call. I gues in reality it's what I do for a living.

OWN,
Nice house! I really like what you did. I am amazed that it is on a flat lot. Your house is definitely designed by somebody that has done this a few times as it is so well thought out. Our covenants say that the detached garage can't be larger than your house, but I also want my garage right off the drive way and not in the back. So, I think that I will have to figure a way out to hook it into the house.
Chpthrl,

I will let you know how the wrap holds up. We surf more than anything so we will see. It has held up great so far with only the cover cinching down on the corners. Didn't think about it till it was too late and left some marks. So we put some felt on the inside of the cover corners. But the wrap is pretty tough. I am paranoid about it so when we tie up, I have 6 bumpers down each side. All I need is some old tires and I would be set like an old fishing boat!
Luckily, I have freinds in high places at a lot of companies so to build it wasn't too bad. Or the real boss, my wife would have not let me build it. Of course, it is for the company! To pull the boat. She knows me too well so she doesn't buy that stuff anymore.

hmmm 3475lb dry weight + 1600lb (min) weight of the trailer + 195lbs (5.6lbs/gallon) of fuel = 5273 lbs.
I seriously hope that your honda is 4wd with the 4500lb capacity... 2wd has 3500lb.
Either way, you're well over the rating of your vehicle. its not normal stopping, its emergency/rapid stopping. This is an accident just waiting to happen.

A buddy of mine is DOT guy and he would park you on side of the road. Other bigger thing is if you get in an accident (even not your fault) you are gonna be uninsuranced as soon as the insurance company finds out the boat was over the legal limit. I know trucks are not cheap (recently bought a Titan) but come on man, you have a $50k boat, buy a full size beater truck in the meantime, it is not safe. My 2 cents anyhow.

I missed the last few posts on this thread awhile ago and have to stoke the Pilot vs truck fire a little. I towed for 2 years with a pilot then bought a 04 f150 pilot towed better and got better fuel mileage. Honda over engineers everything kinda like tige:) . That pilot will tow way better and safer than a "old beater" with drum brakes ,no active traction controll, no air bags etc.
As for ins companys denieing the claim hell its a insurance co. they can allways find a reason can't they?:02:

I know trucks are not cheap (recently bought a Titan) but come on man, you have a $50k boat, buy a full size beater truck in the meantime, it is not safe. My 2 cents anyhow.Towing limits on vehicles are not legal limits. They are only the recommendations from the manufacturer and exceeding such limits may void warranties and damage the vehicle. Would an insurance company deny you a claim because your tires were over the recommended inflation level? (Well, if they could they would certainly try, bastards.) I have seen some really scary towing situations that the police basically ignored. I don't know how the police would feel if the vehicle was involved in an accident.
Anyway, I think the most important consideration is to get a vehicle with a frame. I don't know if the Pilot has a frame. The body does not become involved in the towing load and instead the stress is placed on the frame mounted components, engine, transmission, axle, and hitch.
I could make the argument that my F-150 is not much heavier than my boat if at all. However the tow rating does exceed my boat weight. This is due to the towing package with heavier components, additional cooling, additional braking, higher ratio rear end, larger truck tires, and frame mounted hitch components.

I'm going to have to pull the BS card on this. Its simple physics: the honda pilot is not long enough, nor is it heavy enough to control the load of a boat like that. Its not about pulling power- its about stopping power. Also, an older "beater" truck is going to have a better braking (i.e. TOWING) capacity than a smaller vehicle. Period. Tow rating has as much to do with the ability of a vehicle to control the inertial force of the trailer during emergency deceleration.
In other words, try hooking up a heavy boat like this to a pilot, accelerate to highway speed, then slam on the brakes and swerve as if you're avoiding an obsticle.
My money is on the following result: Since the short (and narrow) wheelbase dont provide enough leverage, coupled with the fact that the boat & trailer far outweighs the tow vehicle, the trailer will keep going in a straight line. Since the tow vehicle is unable to control the inertia, it simply gets dragged along for the ride. This is called jack knifing. Newton's first law of physics (aka "the law of inertia") states that an object in motion tends to remain at motion. Again, simple physics.
Now imagine that there's a minivan full of kids that you were trying to swerve around. You just killed the three that were in the back seat.
Bottom line: You need to pull a full-sized boat with a full-sized truck.

In regards to the features that a pilot has that you claim is justification for ignoring the tow rating specified by the manufacturer's engineers:
Drum vs. Disc Brakes: For what its worth, my brand new 2007 GMC Sierra has drum brakes on the rear, with discs up front. So did my 1993 Dodge. Still think your pilot can stop a trailer better? Think again.
Traction control- Although this may help, your not going to get better traction than you would by simply having more weight over the wheels.
Air bags- What the heck does this have to do with a vehicle's ability to tow and STOP a rig? Brilliant.
Furthermore, as Raythompson indicated, proper towing packages include aux trans coolers, lower gear ratios, frame mounted hitches, etc. The pilot doesnt even have a frame- it has a unibody.
Before you go off and say "Well you really should try driving one." I have. In fact, one of my closest friends has owned one since 2003. I agree that they're built well, but it is by no means a tow vehicle.

Wow, I did not know I would need a fire suit.
First, I no longer own a pilot.
When I bought my boat All I had was a pilot and a accord so the pilot got to tow IMO not Ideal but I thought it did a good job. I then traded my accord for a 04 F-150 which seemed to tow just as well if not worse and the mileage got a lot worse. My comparson is based on towing the same boat to the same places with these two different vehicles.
Ruune, I did not mean to upset you.
My comments about ACTIVE traction controll, and airbags go to the overall saftey of the vehicle. I disagree that drum brakes stop better than disc when towing disc brakes are much more effective and rarely over heat they also allow 4 channel abs where drum do not .
So are you really saying that it is safer to have a 1990 pick up than that pilot? I tried that too. My f-150 was leased and went back last year, thinking I would save some green to perhaps get a new boat I bought a 90 F-250 with a 5.8 to do the job fact is it wouldn't it took longer to stop and way longer to accellerate. I used the pilot instead it worked much better. I should add I live in a sparcely populated area and rarely drive in traffic. Most towing is done on two lane roads @65mph.
I reread you posts Ruune and I guess I really got you pissed off That was not my intention at all. We will just have to agree to disgree that a 4 wheel disc, 4channel active traction controll will stop better than a 93 ram with drums and rear abs at best.

Sorry if I came off like I was pissed off- that was not my intent. I've seen some seriously bad accidents (ex. overloaded trailer and rig crashing into a minivan full of kids) due to this sort of thing. Another example happend when riding my motorcycle from a trip in SW Texas, going down I-10, heading into San Antonio. The driver of a Ford Dually was pulling a triple axle cattle trailer, and the trailer apparently didnt have working brakes. Although no people got hurt, the trailer jacknifed and well, lets just say there was a lot of tenderized steak on the road. :(

I've towed our 22Ve' with our Sequoia and Titan. Wife's Sequoia does marginal; back end a little too soft. Titan tows it no problem but I need to upgrade from the stock tires. The Goodyear's they put on at the factory are crap. Considering how much I trailer, I will probably go with Michelin MTX or BFG AT; both have a stronger sidewall and would be better suited to tow. Since this pic, I added a Leer toneau cover. This truck is a third car for us, so it really only sees Home Depot and the Lake :)

Your friend has too many boats...perhaps I could take one off his hands for him. :D I mean come on, my Sierra would feel left out if it knew that another truck got to pull 3 boats.

They were used for "Our First Set." and "Its Whatever." I believe the latter two boats are sponsor boats.

We have an Expediton that gets tow duty most of the time. The shorter wheel base is noticible on the freeway for sure. I you like to tow at 70mph+, I would consider the longer (EL?) version. The load leveling suspension is quite nice also. It will have to do until the new Sequoia comes out. I wonder if they will make a longer version ??????

Nice truck! I really dig both the "classic" and new body styles! I bought my '07 on 7/31 and just turned 9500. Glad they have 100,000 mile warranties now! One other thing I find interesting- it monitors its own oil life, and I just had the first oil change at 9500 miles.. this is per the computer's recommendation. Talk about oil life! I usually change mine every 3-5k.

I like both styles too. The wife prefers the classic, the nice thing was i got a killer deal on this as the new style just came out so i stole the thing at $28K out the door! Unheard of then for a 4x4! Yeah i'm waiting for the computer to let me know but with as little as gets driven it may be awhile!

What you guys need to think about is what kind of driving you are doing?
If it's during the spring and summer months while towing your 5500 lb. boats then you should be changing the oil much sooner than what your computer is telling you. The computer is not calculating what kind of conditions you are towing or driving under.
Hell your V8 gassers are cheap to have the oil changed, what $40 to $50, I'm paying $95 bones and I have no problem with that cause I plan on keeping this truck for 10 years.
I have an 07 Ford Powerstroke 350 and I change the oil every 3000 miles because I am towing our camper and or our boat and that takes a toll on the oil.
Also keep in mind your tranny fluid, if you are doing a lot of towing it is cheap insurance to flush and refill with new annually.

Computer, I don't trust no stinkin computer :D .
I would like to know how the computer is calculating the degree that the oil is becoming dirty and breaking down.
I work for a large city here in the northwest and the shops changes out the oil on all trucks every 3000 miles reguardless of what the computer says.
I just figure it's cheap insurance, heck I wish I had a 1/2 ton gasser like you guys when I have to pay the bill for an oil change.
Curious what your take is on how often to change the tranny fluid?
Ruune
12-15-2007, 05:18 PM
Well, I figure that the engineers that designed the engine and the system know a thing or two about oil life... plus the computer isnt running a Microsoft OS, so it cant be too inaccurate!

For a 20v, I bet you would be fine. I looked into the same thing not too long ago and found that www.rv.net had some pretty good towing stories/suggestions for the 4runner. I guess the biggest thing most people do to help them tow something with a lot of tongue weight is add airbags to the rear suspension. All 4runners have always been kind of wimpy when it comes to the rear suspension to soften the ride, which is what is nice about airbags, they only come into effect when loaded. Good luck!:ro:

On a GM it actually does. The PCM monitors hot and cold starts, trip time/mileage, and driving conditions via the TPS, Trottle Position Sensor and MAP, Manifold Absolute Sensor, which will indicate engine load due to towing.

Yes, they do tow nice. I pull my 24V no problems with mine. Make sure you do all the maintenance as lined out in the book. Since you are towing with it be sure you change the rear differential oil after 500 miles and make sure to keep receipt and good documentation of all maintenance and oil changes.
I had an engine issue with mine and a rear diff issue right around 12,000 miles and Nissan tried to get out of the warranty until I pulled out all my records and paper work. They did not argue with me then except the fact that I did the work myself Oil changes, Rear Diff, Oil, Ect, Ect.
They said I should of had it done at the dealer. Then we had to bring up that Federal Bill SB1147 that allows you to do your own maintenance or take it to other places to have it done. One thing I did also because they can void the warranty if you don't is I purchased the oil filters from the dealer. That was anther item that saved me. Now I have no problems with the truck and I love my TITAN. It is a lot of truck for a decent price.
Merry Christmas.:D

regardless what the towing capacity is on a GC or any other mid sized suv I would never tow a boat that weighs 4200 dry with one.....$.02
I would agree with you on this one g.
I had a 2 dr sport yukon pulling my 21IR Now it weights what abot 1200 less then your 24ve, and NO WAY would I do it. The yukon got pulled all over it. Yes it could pull it and yest it was rated to but it was very hard to stop and control. The boat pulled me all over the road as well due to the short wheel base.
Buy a good truck and you won't regret it.
I know SPBFAN has a titan for his 24 and it towes it just fine. I would get someting bigger still but hey each to his own.
If you really wanted a smaller tow rig I would upgrade to dual axle electric brakes and put a top of the line brake controller in your tow rig.

How bout a Durango
We had a Durango. I would not reccomend it vs Tahoe, Jeep and a few others like Expedition if you want bigger.
The Durango's rear end hops over bumps when you are towing. At times the 2 in reciever made so much racket I thought I was at a new wave concert.
Even W/o Boat it road like a real stiff pickup. We owned a 99 and then an 02 and got rid of the 02 for an Expedition which doesn't (didn't) know my Fourwinns or my Brothers Maristar were there. Front and rear air and heat made for comfortable people and the herd that goes with. It has a soft ride with or without trailer. Only bitch is like all SUV's Mileage is 12-13 towing and 14 around town to 18.5 on the road with a lead foot. We have the XLT with 5.4.
The only good thing about the Durango's is the beast accelerated well.

i pull my rz2 with a 2002 grans cherokee with the straight 6.....no problems, just when i get to the hills a little but, but around dc dont have to worry about it
I had a Grand Cherokee with straight 6 and was good for just under 4000lbs with equalizing hitch. It could maintain 45-50 on long grade hills but coming down it did get pushed a little with drum breaks on the single axle trailer that never worked. that never worked.
I replaced the straight 6 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 @#% HP V8 and never had an issue with towing the Four Winns I had that loaded for vacation over 4000lbstotsl ( the boat was a giant trunk). I also hauled the Maristar (23 ft) with the GC and it never had a pushing problem because it had dual disks on the trailer. I still have this for short hauls and playing in snow, mud, rain.
I would not pull a Tige 24VE or the RZ4 with a GC but my Expedition would handle them.

I would agree that an Expedition would handle a 24Ve :D That is exactly what I am pulling mine with. :ro: :ro:

I used a 99 Yukon 4x4 5.7L, 2003 Chevy 1500 with 4.8L and a 07 duramax 4x4 to pull our 24v. Although all worked with no problems nothing can compete with the duramax.
Surprisingly the 4.8L Chevy pulled better then the 5.7 Yukon IMO

All right... New tow Vehicle purchased today...
2008 Infiniti QX56... We bought it used with 6,500 miles... It is loaded and absolutely perfect... Wife feels it's a little too big but I say it fits in the garage so it's not too big... :ro:

Nice, I just got my titan for christmas, same engine/trans as the QX56 and I love how it hauls. Also the '08 titan/armada/qx56 got the largest brakes they have put in a truck yet and that is where I really find value in a tow vehicle, I could care less how fast it gets it going, all I want to know is that it will stop me.

Just traded my F-250 Power Stroke for a F-150:( Had to it was headed out of warranty and that 6.0 would have cost me big time! I'll miss that truck alot.....We'll have to see if Ford comes out with a reliable one in the future....that 6.4 is not the best either I've heard. That 150 tows like a champ though....we'll have to see how it pulls the 22i.

Sorry you had to get rid of the diesel :( I absolutely love my GMC Sierra LBZ with the allison tranny it pulls my 5th wheel/jetski (triple tow) like its nothing so I know I wont have an issue with the Z1. But for camping My wifes Yukon will be pulling the Z1 and I am sure that V8 wont have an issue either.
I hear ya on the ford diesel it is a serious problem with those 6.0, but you will save alot of money now going to a V8 as diesel (at least around here) is crazy expensive still compared to gas...remeber when it used to be the other way around...geez oh well.
Rock on!

Thanks guys... It's raining here today so no pix yet... I want to go grab the boat and drive it around the block just to see how she pulls... I'm super excited...
I have some work to do this weekend in the garage but hopefully I'll have a few spare minutes to go grab the boat (It's only a mile away) and take some pix... Actually the wife "NEEDS" to get some towels out that we left in the boat after taking it out last weekend so if it's not raining it's on like donkey kong...
Incidentally I need to pick up a sleeve and ball to tow... Dealer wanted a small fortune... Anyone know where I can get something decent? I'd like to find something local like at a Wal-mart or Autozone or somewhere like that... Harbor Freight? Any advice would be appreciated...

Wal Mart will have the Reese brand, unless you need more than a 5" rise or drop that should do. I ended up getting on of those rapid hitch deals because I need about a 6 inch rise, and all I can say is that it is awesome. I also felt more comfortable that it is rated at 10,000 lbs and the Wal Mart ones are rated at 5,000 lbss.

Good luck with that. Unfortunately, the factory installed hitch is not exactly a standard size. I ended up getting one from the dealer

My valentines gift and new toy transport vehicle. It is a 2007 that I picked up used with a whopping 700 miles on it. It was a smoking deal and I could not pass it up. I have been a GM guy for the last several years, but I'm sure this will treat me well. Does it count if you buy a gift for yourself?

Awesome! You'll love the Toyo MT's they last forever and are the quietest mud terrain I have ever had on a truck. Are they 35's or 37's?
