View Full Version : Sqeaky Impeller

So in running out the boat for the first time this year on sat. I had managed to knock the fake-a-lake off right before I started it. Fired it up and Screeeeeetch!. Cooked that bad boy down to a shredded nub. Pulled the housing off and all the hoses to get all the little bits out and went to put my back up impellar in. Upon inspection of it, I fould a crack in one of blades. Great. "Honey, I'm running down to the boat shop to buy a new impellar." Picked up two new ones and installed one. I can't keep it from squeeking. It's sqeeking bad. At idle, it's constant. Once I put some rpm to it, it goes away. I've never had one do this and it's killin' me. Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

I'd heard that a light coat of waterproof grease on the blades helps ... but DON'T quote me on that one! Just what i'd heard. :D EDIT: Double check the housing and see if rubber is on the inside from running dry.
Buehler, Buehler, anyone, Ferris Buehler...
Sounds to me like you may not be getting enough water in your pump from the fake lake. Also, you may have scratches in your water pump housing. If it is close, I would try taking it to the ramp and starting it on the trailer and see if you are still getting the whine. If yes, pull your pump off and check the housing. Also, are you sure it is not your belt that is whining? Perhaps tightening the belt may resolve it as well.
Bueno Suerte Amigo.

are you sure the squeeking is from the impeller? Mybelt squeaked when it was getting old, or not tight enough, replaced with new belt and no more squeek.

uhhh... is it in straight? umm i heard you can but a drop of soap in there, but not too much or you will have bubbles everywhere.
check belt tension or you could have a bearing going bad in the pump.

If it was the belt would the screetch go away when the RPM is increased?

I KNEW IT!!! Sooner or later one of those fake-a-lakes was going to fall over. I bought a pro-flushional for that same reason. It hooks on to the intake and there's no worries. Much better design IMO.

Do you have pictures of this??? Or a link??? I want to check it out.... Thanks...
Sorry, no pic, but a google search should bring it up. It's called a Pro-flushional and cost about $27. Well worth it.

That looks compact enough for my boat. The fake-a-lake works okay but the bar needs to be at an angle because one of the crossbars on the trailer is in the way.... The angle is the problem here because I have been worrying that the thing will slip.... Thanks, I'll look into this one quickly.... :)

I used the Pro-flushional for years. It's a PITA. I've been using the fake-a-lake for a while now and it's the first time it's fallen off. Totally my fault for not double checking.
I'm thinking that the housing is done for. It's been a long time since I replaced it. I think I'm going to look into one of the run dry impellers though. Anyone got a link. Anyone, anyone?

That would suck in the boat with a squeek.... I wonder if the squeek is louder than his boat horn?????

Dude, I'm absolutely anal about squeeks and rattles and what not. You'll often find me poking around any of my vehicles, tracking down anything loose or noisy or whatever. So yes, the squeek is unacceptable.

i'm the same way! I hate it!

But, is it louder than your horn??? We all know that some Tige's, expecially mine, has this "powerful" horn that sounds like a mosquito buzzing around your ear... I'm asking because I am a firm believer that the louder the squeek the worse the problem. What do you think????

Not louder than horn.

Replaced the housing on Sunday and ran it out. Seems to be all better, but we'll see once it's on the lake. The old housing was definitely used up. Lots of scratches and scoring and what not. I didn't relize how bad it was untill I compaired it to the new one.:o

So, you're telling me that I was right. :D Glad that it is working at home, hopefully it will be resolved on the lake as well.:ro:

You are no longer my hero Moki. :(
Next to be relaced will be the belt. There are a couple of small freys on the edge so, we'll see if that shuts it up.
Dude, that sucks! How are your belt pulleys? When your belt is off try turning your pulleys particularly the belt tensioner and make sure that they are turning freely.

Check that your alternator is spinning freely. A few years ago mine siezed up and burned through the belt. If the alternator bearings are starting to go there might be enough drag to cause the belt to squeek.

I'm putting a new belt on first. If that doesn't get it, I'll start with the pump pully. The squeek is definitely originating from that area so I'm thinking pump pully to start and then move on from there. Process of ellimination. I will check the alt. tonight though.

Nick, Does your engine use V-belts or a Serpentine?
A trick I've used over the years to cure a "chirping" belt is to use wire brush on the back (groove) side of the belt and the in the grooves of the pulleys.
Over time, as the belt ages, it leaves behind little chunks of rubber either stuck in the grooves of the belt or in the pulleys. as these pieces of belt roll across the pulley or belt it makes a chirp or squeel.
Find a place that you can CAREFULLY gain access to the groove side of the belt and the pulleys. Idle engine and gently push the wire brush against the back side of the belt for about 5 to 10msec to clean grooves. Next, do the pulleys.
After this, go ahead and install the new belt. For anyone that wants to clean the belt, but not replace it, smear a dab of di-electric grease (with engine off) across the grooves of the belt, and run the engine for a couple of minutes to distribute the grease. The grease will keep the belt quite and help prevent the rubber chunks from sticking.
Good luck, I hope it is nothing big :ro:

Nice tip chpthril. I'm going to replace the sepentine this week, but I'll be sure to clean the pulleys as well. Thanks.

Alternator spins like a top. I'll see what happens with a new belt and clean pulleys. The old belt definitely has some wear spots on it that appear to be from siezing the water pump.

 Where did that come from? I need a middle finger smiley. Don't worry Moki, I'm not mad, but that one doesn't look too good from this end.
You guys can do whatever you want with this thread. I fixed it. This thread is only good for getting off topic at this point. Hmmm?

Sorry dude, it was all in friendly jest, it was a carry over from you giving me a hard time about the speakers (which I thought was hilarious) and you are always such a good sport. You know that you are one of my favorite Tige posters:ro: and definitely no whiner!
Anyway, I love those old cars as well. When I was young, my Dad would take me up to the state capital where they have this old land speed record car that held the record for a while at Bonneville Salt Flats.

I have been to Boneville many times:D, but only to Bonneville once. I need to go more with it being so close! It's like living where you do and missing the air races.
