We have just purchased an 05 20i, which we think is great except for one thing. Each time we refuel it, it blows back out the filler all over us and the boat. Needless to say the graphics decals are looking sad. Any simialr experiences or tips?

Because boats have relatively flat gas tanks, you'll need to fill it more slowly as the boat gets full. Try a lower setting on the fuel pump.

Yeah, same thing, never found a way to prevent it.
The weird thing though is that even if the guage has been on empty for a while we never seem to put more then 20-25 gallons in it.(36 gal tank)

First off, let me say welcome and congratulations. Post some pics when you get a chance.
This is not uncommon with boats. Boats do not have a "closed" fuel vent system and a pressure cap like cars do. If you fill it to full or if the nozzle kicks off it will probably spew out the vent but will also have no room to expand as the fuel heats up over the course of the day.
What I try to do is fuel the boat slow and listen for the fuel to start gurgling up the filler neck, and stop. I also try to estimate how many gallons it will take so I know it is getting close.
You can also hold a towel over the vent to catch any over flow.

I fold a paper towel into a 3 by 6 inch rectangle and put the end of it in the gas fill with a little flap on the outside to retrieve it with. This does a darn good job at keeping gas from spewing out all over the boat. The paper towel usually absorbs the slosh before it can get on the boat.

I get the same thing, pissed me off the first time I filled up. I never had this problem with my jet. I guess the angle of the gas tanks and gas cap were different. I just wrap a few shop towels around the nossle and and I have not had a problem since (I just have to keep a few towels around and some quick detailer ready just in case)

Same problem here, We fill ours up before we bring it in to winterize, and over the really really cold days it has overflown and left streaks on what is left of our gelcoat the only thing we can think of is expansion and contractsion but how could it do that when it is frozen out side??? Any tips it smells like gas inside whats wrong!

Best tip I can offer is to slow down, and listen to the fuel going in. Also stay out of the way of the gas blowback!
Honestly, I never leave the fuel on automatic anymore, I've had the same issues.

That's it....I do the same and no problems.
Never had a problem on our old boat!.....But I'll keep the Tige with a gas problem spilling over our old boat...:D

Thanks for the advice and glad to hear it is a common thing, Here is a pic of our trip to Sommerset Dam (QLD Australia) last Sunday.
I own a 2004 switch i and had the same problem you might want to check the vent hose which runs from the tank on the right side to the through hull fitting on the side , mine had a drupe in the hose which created a sink trap not letting the preasure out ,I lifted the hose and tied if off under the deck and now it takes the gas fine.

Great looking boat!
She's a beauty, mate! What part of QLD is that? I lived in Brisbane, Townsville, and Gympie many years ago. Good to see a "Banana Bender" on the forum! Do they still call people from Queensland that?

Coach- and others....If you have dual fuel fills, unscrew both fuel caps and the air will vent faster....this applies to all 2007 models.....

Hmmm..never thought of that. Will this prevent the spillage too?

Yeah it almost eliminates spillage....you can pump at full speed.....
I bet you all know this but the fuel tank vent is in the front of the tank, so when the boat is angled bow down the vent isnt venting properly, which can sometimes cause back pressure and then voila, you get a fuel shower....
Definitely open both caps if you have them....

I didn't think the vent unscrewed..... Your boat does... Now I have to check it........ BRB

I had this problem with our 2300V and also has a fuel smell in the port side compartment in front of the passenger. The smell was coming form a leaking fuel/air seperator that is located within a few feet of the vent on the side of the boat. I relpaced the leaking unit with a much larger one, LG-100, and the problem never happened again. I still listen for the gurgling of the fuel as I fill and our 05 24V has the small one like our 2300V. Spilling fuel in a waterway is a big time fine if you get caught.
Check out this link for a report on the fuell/air seperators.
