Upholsetery redone

Just got a quote to have my interior redone.......

$5200.....ouch......but it's all I have left 'til this 11 year old boat is brand new. I will never get my money back out of a $5200 interior though....it's a shame Tige doesnt have the skins anymore.

$5200 :eek: Good lord! I got a price to redo mine for $1500 from one of the local upholstery joints! Of course it might have tuck-n-roll but hey :D :D

I had a 19' bowrider re-done for $1200, that included: all vinyl and foam, building a new motor box, new seat wood bottoms for 3 bow cushions and 2 aft jump seats (next to motor box). I could have stepped up on the quality of the vinyl to a more factory weight for $2000.

I bet it would be a damn good job, but I think I would keep looking. JMHO

This was a specialty marine upholstery joint....same place that just patched my boat cover. They can also build carbo biminis and whatever else....lts of big time mini yachts there.

I am going to hit up this patio center that does upholstery next. I found that proce to be high, but I didn't think it was extremely unreasonable. Maybe they just didn't want to mess with it.

I re-did my 84 Supra mostly myself. Most of the square pieces are really easy to do. The tricky ones are the angles, the engine cover and the seats. I actually asked around and found a neat little upholstery shop. They did my engine cover for $150 bux!! I think all total, I spent < $1000. If you remake (or reuse) the bases for all the pieces, that'll save you loads of cash. The other thing they stick you with is the price of the foam. You can go to Joann's or some other craft store and probably get the same stuff cheaper. For that matter, Joann's sells Marine-grade vinyl for about 6-7 bux per yard. The limit there is that they only have 5 or 6 colors.

If you find the right shop, they might take all your pieces and put em together for you for just labor.

$5200 is waaaaaay too much cash.

Probably so. My best friend is a an upholsterer and if he doesn't want to do a job, he simply quotes it high. He hates to do couches, so he quotes people an arbitrary high # and if they say yes, he will do it, but at least he's getting paid well for his troubles.

I've done some work for him, and I can't imagine that any part is too difficult on your boat. The problem is that the vinyl is really tough to sew, and you need a commercial quality sewing machine to stitch it. For a small item, a home sewing machine will do, but you will break needles.

If you decide to do it yourself, I can help walk you through some of the more difficult things (welting is a pain in the butt).

Did your quote include new foam? If not, that is rather high, if so, it's still high, but more reasonable. Also make sure they plan to use Stainless Steel staples.

You can all ways find cheaper. But from what I have seen and delt with cheaper is just what you get. I paid $350 for a rear cushion and another $300 for two front cushions on my old jet. Both turned out great. I was quoted $5000 for and entire redo with new wood in the bow that had rotted out (on a 21 ft open bow) and that included new areas for drink holders. If they are only doing skins and foam then that is high for your boat. Is there much competion in your area? If not you might be stuck. Out here in So Cal there is a ton of competion and you can drive prices down, but I try to find a shop that does top quality work for a reasonable price.

I don't know where you are but if you are near New Iberia there is a place called Sterling's there. I got the name from the guy that built my parents boat. Don't know if that will help or not but I hope it will. $5200 seems quite high.

That quote was from Sterlings. I am about 12 minutes from that shop.

I think it was for just the vinyl work. There is no competition here. That's the only marine shop worth a dime in a 50 mile radius; my storage cover sat since t-giving at the last place, I finally just picked it up. I may try Alexandria soon. My foam and backing is all still in great shape. He wanted $1200 just for the engine cover. I have a coupl eof seams splitting, and the engine cover is beginning to split rot with all the dark gray vinyl.

just look for an upholstery shop. Doesn't necessarily have to be a marine shop. The regular shops can get (if they don't already have) the marine vinyl. And because they are less "specialty", they are usually cheaper, but still do good work.
