All you guys with Subwoofers

I've got 2 12" subs in a clear glass box that takes up a ton of storage space. I want to mount the subs under the dash but I have a few questions and I know a lot of you have done this. Please give help to any questions you can

1. how do you face the sub at a downward angle? all the boats i've seen so far just have it mounted flush on the wall. Any pics of the angle?

2. will cutting 2 12" holes in the wall so close together weaken the boat? an old post (dajuice) showed a pic of a wall that was completely taken out and then replaced after subs were installed.

3. The speakers are in a box now. will installing them in the wall without a box ruin the sound?

4. if so, will the compartment under the dash act as a box if it is sealed well?

5. if not, how is needed air space determined and measured?

6. i've been looking all over for sub grills fancier than the waffle type but not agro crazy. any ideas were to look?

7. i've heard the cut outs are drawn on the board already once the carpet is removed? yes/no? if so, is it for 1 or 2 subs?

I have just one 12 inch sub and it does fine without being directed down.

I think you can put 2 12 inch subs on the wall, and it likely won't weaken things, as that the wall there does not seem to be part of the structural integrity of the boat. I couldn't put a second sub there, because my heater is attached to the back side of the wall and I wouldn't have quite enough room.

There are a wide variety of applications for different subwoofers and some are going to sound pretty poor without a box, some are made for 'open air applications'. The subs you have should have something about the recommended volume necessary for the box in the owner's manual. I would imagine that the volume of the compartment is going to be more than most boxes and not serve you adequately if you have to have a box for the sound.

I got this waffle grill online and have had plenty of complements on it, since it looks stainless instead of plain black wire.

Did you use the cutouts that are behind the carpet under the dash or just cut a new hole for the sub.

The cut-out in the wall is for a 10" sub. You can make the hole larger and put a bigger sub with no problems. To find the cut-out you can rub your fingers across the carpet with some force and should find the notches in the panel. We should be installing a 12" sub in a 24ve next week and could take some pictures of what I am talking about.

I used to have a 10 inch sub in there and I had to widen the hole to get the 12 to fit. I didn't notice any cutouts. Someone on this board has 2 12's down there, but he put the lower one slightly to the right and the upper one a little to the left to make them fit, if I remember correctly.

I don't know why you would want to angle them down. that might even have a negatie effect on the sound. two subs shouldn't weaken the boat either, that wall isn't a main supporting wall to my knowledge. What kind of subs are you planning on using? I recomend kicker for a boat because the will pump out alot of bass with a small amp.

I've got 2 12" Diamond Audio subs in a box behind the observers seat. It sounds good but the compartment is so sound proof I need to lower the cusion to let the sound out. That's why I want to mount them under the dash.

I saw a Polk Audio twin sub box on the internet that had cool looking grills. Does anyone know if the grills can be bought by themselves?

Yeah, I think you can buy the grills seperate. I have a pair of 12" Polk audio grills you can buy if you want. They are brand new and still in the box. I will post a pic later.

SUBWOOFER BOX TEST

I wanted to see the difference the box made on the sound of the sub. I unscrewed the subs but left them sitting in the box. With the music playing I lifted the sub for a few seconds and then lowered it back down. What a difference. It was about 3 times louder in the box. Just wanted to see it for myself.

Is there a box on the back side?

No. They do not include a box but you could build or buy one and install it.
