View Full Version : Best move I've ever made

Two months ago, I uprooted my wife and kids and moved them out of Southern California to Dallas Texas. People told me I was crazy to move if I didn't have to leave, and they all wanted to know what would convince me to move away from the best weather in the world? On the drive out I was questioning this decision myself. I was leaving friends and family behind while not really knowing anyone in this new home town. I began to reflect on almost 40 years of living in Southern California's sun, and temperate climate. I had about 24 hours to think about what I was doing as my wife and kids slept and watched movies in the truck and ignored me on the drive. I was also thinking about a 5000 lb. boat I was dragging to Texas at $2.80/gallon. I then reminisced about how the boat had finally been attached to my truck, and why it was I was driving away from the only home I had ever known.

I reviewed in my mind why I was leaving Tige' Watersports. These are the people who convinced me in 1992 to order an open bow ski boat that had not yet been made. I bought it from a dealer (Chris Ainsworth) who worked out of a garage and was hoping to open a shop soon for this new company. That boat was guaranteed by Charlie Pigeon to be what I wanted, or I didn't have to take it home with me. I owned that boat for 11 years of trouble free enjoyment. The service by Greg and Oscar's guys was the best in the world. TWS also has a great group of sales and pro-shop people who are more of a family than most families I have met. After a very long time of wishing for a new boat, I upgraded to my 2nd Tige' in 2003 with my wife's permission. I believe I have at least 8 more years left with this new boat. I have always loved my time on the water, and the people at Tige' Watersports always kept my boat running flawlessly. The only problem was finding some water on which to enjoy my boat. There are more boats than water in Southern California. We decided to move so we would have an opportunity to go to a lake without strict safety limits on how many boats are allowed on the lake. With a finite amount of room, there is a mandatory limit on the amount of boats allowed on the lake. Usually all of those spots are full by 7:30 AM, or you need reservations to launch your boat!

We have now been in Texas for 10 weeks, and we have been to 4 different lakes the locals have told us are too crowded. Either I am used to the worst conditions in the world or the people complaining about these lakes are CRAZY! Now, we get to a lake on a Saturday or Sunday after 8:00 which is not even possible in California. We can now find a place to wakeboard with flat water for hours on end. The lakes here are huge compared to the mud puddles we had back home. In Texas there are fewer boats with three times the amounts of good launch facilities.

The clincher was on Labor Day itself - we left our house at 9:30 AM, and drove what we were told was a "long way" to a lake 25 minutes north of Dallas's suburbs. When we launched, there were only 2 other wakeboat trailers in the parking lot. We boarded, swam, anchored and had lunch. We then boarded some more, and used up a full (and expensive) tank of fuel exploring another great Texas lake. I cannot go back to Southern California, after seeing what the rest of the world has for waterways, and places to enjoy my boat. I would never even think of taking my boat out for the day during Labor Day weekend when we were in Southern California.

Texas is beautiful!

I need recommendations for a place to ride and stay for a weekend in Austin. My family now wants to visit all of the Texas riding spots, and keep exploring new areas. They are intrigued by how much more fun boating can be, when there isn't a million others trying to all ride on the same 1 mile square mud puddle.

(for the California natives - wait until you see how low the real estate costs are! Your shack is worth the same as a mansion here.)

If you ever get lonely for your So-Cal people, you can always come up my way. We've got a large contingent of So-Cal folks, and the number grows every day.

Great story by the way!!

Brad,

Great story. Its good to hear that you and your family are liking the good ol friendly state of Texas. Being that you live so close to me I would be more than happy to show you around some of the best spots Texas has to offer. Some of the best riding spots in the world can be found a hour away from us. These places have glass in the middle of the weekend with 15 mph winds.

I will give you a call in about a week so we can hook up.

By the way did you end up going to Ray Roberts that week that I spoke to you?

I did go to Ray Roberts on Labor Day. That was a great lake with many different places to ride. With it only being a half hour away, we will go back! Thanks for the tip, and I do look forward to trying out the Brazos and some other spots soon.

I have thought about the same thing. Moving accross the country. Right now we are in the Nevada desert and we went on vacation to Beaver Lake in Arkasas, and it's awesome. Soooo much more greenery. However the job market for myself isn't the greatest. But I would load up in a heart beat.

rushin,

I have Table Rock, Beaver lake, and Bull shoals lake all within 30-45 minutes of my front door. Table Rock is the busiest with Bull Shoals being the calmest, and they all have that same feel to them. Sum total of about 150,000 surface acres!!

rushin, how could you? Actually, I do know. All the pretty lakes are at least 2 hours from you. Just move to the biggest little city and you can ride mountain lakes with clear water and trees that are only 30-60 min. away. Boca, Stampede, Frenchmans, Davis, Spalding, Donner, Fallen Leaf and oh yeah, a little place called Tahoe. Do you ever ride Pyramid? I know there's no trees there and it is bad for your boat but, I've had some of the best days of my life out there.

Welcome to Texas :D

How did you like Ray Roberts? My family and I go there alot, and love it. What lakes do you normally ride at?

If you see us out there (Black/Red 22v), come say hey!

Try Tennessee, specifically East Tennessee. You can travel 40 miles in one direction before encountering a damn. And you can lock through the damn at no charge for another 40 miles. You can travel 800 miles without turning around. The water is excellent and is never crowded.

I lived in Texas and used Canyon Lake and Buchanan Lake among some others. I like Tennessee lakes much better. But there is a lot of humidity that you have to endure.

NICKYPOO- We have been to Pyramid a bunch of times, it takes about an hour to get there. We stay at Crosby's Lodge in Sutcliff if it is overnight. We are thinking about going up there next weekend. Weather permitting.

Good ol' Crosby's. 30 min. flat from my doorstep. Do you know if they have that ramp opperational yet? Best water on the lake is the south side of Anaho. If you didn't know already.;)

NICKYPOO-opperational? What was wrong with it? I know last year it was real shallow at the end of the year. We had to go to Pelican.

We found it smooth at the northeast end. But I did not know about south of Anaho.

Last time I was out there, which was late last season, they had it closed off. I figured it was something to do with the marina being closed. It's been at least a year since I was out there though.

Yeah, the northeast end is really nice. Fox Bay is what is officialy called. We call it the Honey Pot but, it is quite a trek to get over there and back. That is why we usually just head over to Anaho. Along the south side of the island it's always glass so long as there isn't any wind coming up from the south which is really rare.

One small note on Fox Bay. That is where they filmed High Planes Drifter, one of my personal favorite Clint Eastwood movies.

rushin - I suggest you pack the bags and move on out. I almost moved on to Beaver Lake, as I do a lot of business in that area. My wife couldn't see living in a college and 1 business town, so we picked the next large city area with an airport. Beaver Lake is beautiful, and they get some nice weather in the summer and an occasional snowfall in the winter. You won't regret a change of pace from the desert.

yllw20 - thanks for the link, Those cabins look like a different experience we may try out. I'm looking forward to some Austin music and barbecue.

David - I'm surprised I haven't seen you on a lake yet. We live in between Grapevine and Lewisville. We really liked Ray Roberts, and we are looking forward to Cedar Creek, the Brazos and Ray Hubbard in the upcoming weeks. If you see us on the lake please flag us down. I think we may be the only California boat on Lewisville, and the only one with a Phat Budde Tower, we are easy to spot!

flackpack- We were there visiting my mom in Rogers, they live in Beaver Shores so I would like to go to that area. There just is not many jobs in that area for me including Fayetteville. And I would be taking my wife away from her family which isn't far away. I can deal without seeing mine:D .

flackpack - Awesome! From experience, I'll tell you this ahead of time, Cedar Creek can be a fun lake to hang out on, but since it is one of the only lakes allowing docks/lakehouses, and it's line with retaining walls, you can expect wallies and rough water.

On another note, you should check out www.dallaswakeboarding.com and the Texas Wakeboard Tour this weekend at Texas Mastercraft. It's the last stop, and almost a Pro Wakeboard Tour sized event. If you get some free time, definitely go check out the Dallas scene and events down that way.

Next time I'm out, I'll look for you guys.

This is close to where I am from. Also close by, there's also a small ramp and spot on Lake Lavon (down a old gravel road just south of Farmersville) that only 5 or so boats knew about, when I lived there. Big enough for a ski course and surrounded by trees sticking out of the water. So it looks unrideable from Hwy 380, but is glass 90% of the time, because it's so protected.

Lake Austin is nothing but Ski/Wakeboats and has a little place called Hula Hut down past the 360 bridge.

Lake Travis is awesome and you can cruise up the Perdenales river from there. Also home to a Carlos and Charlies.

Texoma is HUGE with sandy islands out in middle of the lake for hanging out.

Typing this makes me wish I never left...
