Yes, it makes a boat that is designed for wakeboarding better for waterskiing.

This movie (http://www.tige.com/tige2003/performance-versatility/images/mov1.htm) can help you explain how the TAPS works.

i am sure it makes a wakeboard boat better to waterski but is there a big difference as i have heard its kind of a joke and then i have heard it is also good

Test drive one you will see a big difference.

TAPS makes a big difference. I've both wakeboarded and slalomed with the TAPS in all positions (usually on accident, because the driver didn't adjust). Tiges are more versatile for that reason.

Would you say that for recreational wakeboarders, TAPS can eliminate the need for ballast?

I have a 2000 21i and I really like the taps feature, when I don't have a few guys in the boat I like having the ballast in their. I'm just a reacreational wakeboarder as well but it's fun to push yourself beyond what the taps can offer. Although what it does offer is very adequate.

Ok, Taps will not increase the size of your wake. It will help with wake shape. The only way to make the wake larger is sink the boat deeper with ballast.

The Wolfpack is right. The shape of the wake changes with the TAPS. At wakeboarding speeds, with the TAPS in the slalom position, the wake is much rampier, to the point of not giving lift very well. At slalom speeds the TAPS being down makes the wake much easier to navigate while skiing.
