Any ideas on the best way to get rid of a scratch in the boat?

It all depends on the scratch and how deep it is.
A light scratch may be buffed out with wax. A deeper scratch may required lightly buffing the gel coat with rubbing compound and then lots of wax / buffing to regain gloss.
A deeper scratch may require light sanding with 600 gritt sandpaper (wet), then rubbing compound, then lots of wax / buffin to regain gloss.
For a deeper scratch, gel coat repair may be needed. You can buy a gel repair kit from places like Overtons for small dents and scratches. With this, you mix colors to liquid gel to match your boat, you then apply a hardener and paste it on your boat. Then, before it dries out (which happens very quickly), you place a piece of mylar which comes in the kit to make the repair smooth. After it dries, you pull the mylar and buff with wax to regain gloss.
Or you can take it to an expert and git her done! :D

If ya can't live with it, or remove it,, take it to Tige in Corona.
It's reasonable priced and outstanding work by the Ayotolla of gel and fiberglass.
