Do boats have a title or just the trailer? I recently sold my RZ4 and the bank I had the boat financed with mailed my title straight to the new owner. However, they only received the title to the trailer. The people who bought my boat called today and asked why the title to the boat wasn't sent with the trailer title.

I didn't have time to call the bank, but my guess is that there isn't a title issued on boats....?

It depends on the states.

Some require titles for trailers, some don't. There for sure should be a title on the boat if there is one on the trailer. In OK you only titled the boat.

apparently in CO they only title the trailer and not the boats. Hope this helps.

Colorado doesn't do a title on the boat, only the trailer. I bought my first boat in Utah and they had titles and I took it to the DMV and they looked at me like I was stupid or something. It's really odd that they do it that way because you could technically sell the boat out from underneath the lien holder and they would have no idea.

Pretty recent in NC (2007) that boats require a title when purchased or transferred - our trailers have always been titled. I bought a SeaDoo in new in 1994 that will have to be titled if I sell it, but I believe it came with a Certificate of Origin that can used to obtain one.

When I sold my first Tige, I sold it to a guy from Arizona. He did not get a title for the trailer, because apparently he did not have to for Arizona. Utah requires a title for both.

Then he moved to Utah and was getting ready to sell again, and he could not find any title for the trailer, and called me to see if I had it. I am sure the bank had sent it to him directly after the sale...but because he did not need it, he probably threw it away or misplaced it.

Makes it tough that each state is so different. I agree with what was said above. I could sell my boat to someone in Florida without the trailer and the leinholder would be hosed if I only had to title the trailer.

Thanks, I'll let my buyer know there wasn't a title issued for the boat, since I live in Colorado.

In Minnesota the boat is titled, and sometimes the trailer. The trailer's GVWR determines wether it's titled ot not.

here in AZ our registration is our title. all it requires is a signature of the owner, it doesnt require a notary or anything. Also the trailers do have to have titles here in AZ. So make sure the registration is not the title for your boat like it is here.
