Fuel Pump damaged by leaving out plug?

I went to test drive a boat a few weeks back and owner left the plug out. We noticed pretty quickly but alot of water got in. I ended up buying the boat and the fuel pump went out four days later on my first crank back out on the water.

Do you think the water coming in from the plug have damaged the fuel pump?
